The Rab Ultrasphere 4.5 is the lightest mattress to the Rab range so far. We are really pleased with this mattress because despite its very light weight it offers an excellent level of comfort and thermal resistance.
Weighing in at under 360 grams and rated R 4.3, this full-size three-season mattress is a worthy challenger to the most popular long trekking mattress, the Thermarest NeoAir Xlite, as well as the ever-popular Big Agnes Zoom UL Insulated.
The fact that Rab's new mattress has been a real success is evidenced by its triumph at the ISPO Awards 2023.
The reflective TILT (Thermo Ionic Lining) film reduces heat loss through radiation, while the internal baffle arrangement reduces heat loss through flow. All this ensures that you sleep in comfort even when the temperature drops significantly. Another advantage is that the inner foil does not curl in any way and is still quiet enough when changing positions.
Thanks to the use of these technologies, the mattress achieves a very good thermal resistance value of R 4.3, making it a fully fledged three-season mattress. For use in the snow, however, we would definitely complement it with a foam mattress.
As a climate-neutral company, Rab naturally uses recycled materials for production. The outer material is recycled 20D polyester with a TPU and DWR-free fluorocarbon inner layer. The outer fabric also has a graduated print to help keep the sleeping bag in the same position.
The valve can be found on the underside of the mattress near the head. It is flat and therefore does not interfere at all. To inflate, just flip off the first cap and you can inflate straight away, in this case the air only goes into the mattress in one direction (it cannot deflate). As soon as we want to inflate the mattress, we just flip the second cap and the air is out in a second. The deflation is surprisingly fast.
A great inflatable bag is also included. In a word, it's great. It's big in size but weighs only 71 grams. It's incredibly easy to get air in, has taped seams and can easily be turned into a full-sized waterproof bag that you can use as a cover for your sleeping bag. You can inflate it for about 3-4 repetitions.
Another thing that Rab has really done well is the perfect packaging for the mattress. This works completely differently than all the traditional packaging from other manufacturers. It's basically a simple pocket with an elasticated hem, into which you can very easily put the packed car mattress and the opening is covered by a simple "lid" with integrated elastic bands. There is no struggle in packing. Packing is really a breeze. Inside the packaging you will still find a pocket with a repair kit.
Produced in two sizes. Regular is the standard 183 x 51 cm. The Long Wide version, measuring 196 x 64 cm, is especially useful for tall and sturdy figures. Both versions are the same thickness and a beautifully comfortable 8 cm.
