Pinguin's largest backpack, with the lid firmly attached to the pack. The top of the backpack flips up, but to the opposite side, i.e. to the front, which is especially appreciated by climbers when handling on the rock. In addition, this feature allows access to the backpack without having to take it off. The fastening is not solved by a belt with a buckle, but by a zipper with two sliders. This makes the Trail 42 not look conventional making it stand out from its competitors with a "cap". In short, it gives a clean and compact impression.
The Pinguin Trail 42 is very simple. Its 42-litre capacity is surprisingly large considering its pleasantly low weight of just under 1250 grams. What's more, the weight of the pack can drop down to an even kilo after removing the shell and back reinforcement.
On the backpack we find two zippered pockets. One bulkier one at the back of the pack and one flat one, but it takes up the whole front of the pack. For those for whom this is not enough, there are still massive grommets on the top of the pack for adding additional straps of three centimeters in width.
At the bottom is a pocket with a rain cover for the backpack. A little higher up there are loops for trekking poles, which can be hidden in small pockets if needed, so there's no risk of hooking them on a branch when moving through dense undergrowth.
There are two stretch mesh pockets on the sides, which also house compression straps with buckle closures that can be used to tighten the pack when it's not fully filled, and can also be used to secure a load such as a caravan or tent. Another pair of straps is already with buckles for more comfortable handling.
On the front of the pack is a pocket with a vertical zipper, which inside takes up almost the entire area of the front panel, making it suitable for large maps and other flat pieces of equipment.
The lid of the backpack contains a pocket with a capacity of about 3 litres. The rear of the main compartment then has a hydration pack pocket and access to the removable back padding. The last pleasant surprise hides a hip belt that not only can be removed, al also is fitted with two small zippered pockets for smaller gear that needs to be kept handy.
