The Rab Borealis is one of Rab's best-selling jackets. It's a phenomenal all-purpose jacket that you can honestly wear for just about anything. Yes, that might sound like a cliché, but it's simply a fact.

We take this piece with us for running, climbing, cross-country skiing, ski mountaineering, backcountry adventures, biking, hiking, proms, and family celebrations. And it always performs flawlessly.

The Rab Borealis Hoody is a lightweight, windproof softshell jacket with excellent breathability and durability. Paired with the right mid-layer, it’s a reliable companion for all year round.

Model 2.0

This is the second generation of the model. In 2025, this iconic jacket underwent some updates. The most significant change was moving the "Napoleon" pockets on the chest down to the sides of the jacket—essentially turning them into classic hand pockets. However, they are still easily accessible, even when wearing a climbing harness. They are also slightly smaller, but still offer ample storage capacity for essentials. They are lined with mesh (100% polyester), so they do not compromise the jacket’s excellent breathability.

Just like its predecessor, the hood is designed to be worn under a helmet, but personally, we had no trouble at all wearing it over the helmet when necessary. Like the rest of the jacket, it’s incredibly flexible with flat seams. The main zipper, as well as the zippers on the pockets, remains the best you can get today—YKK. Specifically, the main zipper is a one-way YKK® VISLON®, and the chin guard will be appreciated not only by those with beards.

The bottom hem adjustment remains unchanged, and we’re glad about that. It’s a simple and functional two-way adjustment system. You don’t have to be particularly dexterous to operate it with one hand while wearing a glove.

The Borealis Hoody 2.0 has a specific weight of 130 g/m², which is neither too light nor too heavy—it’s just right. It’s a lightweight yet durable, recycled, stretchy softshell with excellent wind resistance and breathability. It wicks away moisture brilliantly and, on top of that, dries incredibly fast. A DWR finish is standard nowadays; in our case, it’s fluorocarbon-free. The jacket can withstand light rain or prolonged drizzle, but of course, it is not a waterproof jacket. However, as we mentioned above, even if it gets wet, you’ll be dry again in no time after the rain.
